New Virtual Library Gives Access To Censored News Stories – The Power Of Minecraft

Don Wood – MessageToEagle.com – No one likes censorship, but it exists. Access to information is not something everyone can take for granted. There are many countries where stories from independent newspapers are censored and cannot be read. This will change now.

Minecraft, the world’s most popular computer game will host a new virtual library filled with censored news stories in both English and the language they were originally written in.

Anyone with access to the Minecraft server hosting the library will be able to read censored news stories.

In many countries, free information is hard to access. Websites and newspapers are censored, and journalists get arrested and have to fear for their lives.

Reporters Without Borders came up with a clever idea to overcome censorship by building a safe haven for press freedom.

Without access to independent media. Many young people have no other option than to rely on heavily manipulated by governmental disinformation campaigns. Youngsters may not even notice the difference because they have never experienced the power of independent media.

But video games have not been restricted yet, and with more than 145 million active players every month, Minecraft is the most popular one.

Minecraft hasn’t been censored yet allowing Reporters Without Borders (RSF) to use this backdoor to build “The Uncensored Library” – Inspired by the neoclassical architecture of ancient Rome and Greece, the library is now accessible on an open server for Minecraft players around the globe.

The library is filled with books, containing articles that were censored in their country of origin. These articles are now available again within Minecraft hidden from government surveillance technology inside a computer game. The books can be read by everyone on the server, but their content cannot be changed. The library is growing, with more and more books being added to overcome censorship.

“In many countries around the world, there is no free access to information. Web- sites are blocked, independent newspapers are banned and the press is controlled by the state. Young people grow up without being able to form their own opinions.

By using Minecraft, the world’s most popular computer game, as a medium, we give them access to independent information,“ Christian Mihr, Managing Director Reporters Without Borders Germany said in a press statement.

To start with, the library will be filled with banned stories from five countries that rank near the bottom of Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index, including Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam.
