MessageToEagle.com – Mycenaean civilization was one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, famous for its majestic architecture and imposing monuments.
Mycenae is generally understood to have been settled around 2000 BC but pottery shards have been found dating from a thousand years earlier, making it an early Bronze Age site among the earliest settlements in the region and a contemporary of the Minoans of Crete.
Recently, an ancient Greek Mycenaean tomb was unearthed, in Amfissa, central Greece during an irrigation project that required excavation in the area.
It is a unique finding, the first of its kind that has ever been found in West Locris and one of the few in central Greece.

It is not known whether the Mycenaeans displaced an older Neolithic culture that occupied the site 6,000 years ago, or whether they themselves began expand their knowledge and reach out to other contemporary, ancient cultures and eventually evolving into one of the ancient world’s most influential and sophisticated civilizations.
Except for a large amount of skeletal material, in the tomb, which was used for more than two centuries, from the 13th to the 11th century BC, there were also discovered a large amount of artifacts.
As Greek Reporter writes, the untouched Mycenaean tomb located only a short distance from the ancient city of Amfissa, reveals important information about the topography, the habitation during the 2nd millennium.
Except for a large amount of skeletal material, in the tomb, which was used for more than two centuries, from the 13th to the 11th century BC, there were also discovered a large amount of artifacts.
In the tomb there were found forty-four vases with painted decorations, stirrup jars, small vessels for storage of aromatic oils, figurines, bronze objects, such as a spearhead, a sword and a deep bowl and a large number of jewelery, rings, mainly bronze and a gold with engraved decoration, beads of semiprecious stones that make necklaces and gems, many of which bear engraved decoration themes inspired by the animal kingdom.
Within the burial chamber archaeologists found a large amount of skeletal material, which had accumulated near the surrounding walls, while a few better preserved burials were also uncovered.
The full scientific research regarding the recent finding will be made by a team of archaeologists and it is expected to provide new information about the archaeological and historical development of the region.
