Lighthouse Of Alexandria: Ancient Wonder Of The World Will Be Rebuilt In Egypt

MessageToEagle.com – The Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, will be rebuilt near its original location.

Also known as the Pharos at Alexandria, the structure was built at the beginning of the 3rd century BC, by Sostratus of Cnidus, perhaps for Ptolemy I Soter (a Macedonian general under Alexander the Great, who became ruler of Egypt) and it was finished during the reign of Soter’s son Ptolemy II of Egypt in about 280 BC.

It was impressive in its construction and scale, and legends claim that its light (a reflective mirror) was visible in the harbor from 35 miles away.

The lighthouse was badly damaged in the earthquake of 956, and then two new earthquakes reduced it to rubble in 1303 and 1323.

Built by the Greek architect Sostratus of Cnidus for the purpose of guiding sailors into the harbor, the tower was completed and inaugurated during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285 BC-246BC).

‘The original building comprised three stages: a lower square section with a central core, a middle octagonal section and a circular section at its top,’ according to Greco-Roman archaeology professor Fathy Khourshid.

‘Its top used to have a mirror that reflected sunlight during the day while a fire was lit at night in order to guide ships.’

In 1994, remains of the original building were unearthed on the floor of the sunken part of Alexandria’s eastern harbor.

With a height estimated at 130 meters, (420 feet) the tower was the tallest manmade structure on Earth for many centuries.
