Legend Of Jin Chan: The ‘Golden Toad’ – Money Frog That Brings Luck And Is A Feng Shui Charm

It’s a funny-looking creature resembling a frog. It has only three legs and a flat broad body often covered in various colors that symbolize the stars. It sits on a pile of coins and stares with red eyes at you with a coin in its mouth. This odd-looking creature, known as Jin Chan, the Golden Toad, the Money Frog is said to bring luck and is a famous Feng Shui charm.

The story about Jin Chan, the Money Frog can be traced to an ancient Chinese legend. Apparently, one day the Daoist God Liu Hai, who was a very kind and respectful person, always willing to help others encountered an inquired fox while walking around the mountains. Liu Hai wanted to save the fox and transformed it into a beautiful girl wanting to help him become a god. In order to do this, they needed to trick a frog into a well, so that the pair could ascend together. The trick was successful and Liu Hai was able to use the frog’s power to become a god. This frog is supposed to be the Jin Chan.

According to another ancient Chinese legend, the Jin Chan was the greedy wife of one of the Eight Immortals, who was transformed into a toad as punishment for stealing the Peaches of Immortality

It is said that his mythical creature appears during the full moon, near houses or businesses that will soon receive good news, Of course, most of the time this good news is money-related.

Today, Jin Chan, the Money Frog represents a popular Feng Shui charm for luck and success.  Feng shui is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics. Feng Shui is a Chinese philosophical system that examines how the placement of things and objects within it affect the energy flow in our living environment, and how these objects interact with and influence our personal energy flow. Feng Shui states that our personal energy flow affects how we think and act, which in turn affects how well we perform and succeed in our personal and professional life.

According to Feng Shui beliefs, Jin Chan symbolizes the flow of money and helps attract and protect wealth, and guards against bad luck.

It is also important to know where to place the Jin Chan. The money frog should never be positioned facing the main door (“outward”). It also “should never be kept in the bathroom, bedroom, dining room or kitchen.”
