Auroville – A City Free From Politics, Money And Religion
Cynthia McKanzie – MessageToEagle.com – Have you ever wondered what life on Earth would be if we could create a society without politics, money, and religion? Would this be a better world?
It sounds almost like science fiction, something we could accomplish in the far distant future, if ever, However, there is already such a place and it’s called Auroville. Some say it’s a paradise on Earth and people who live there co-exist without money, religion, and politicians.

Founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (1878 – 1972), a French woman who was a spiritual guru and occultist known to her followers as the Mother, Auroville is located in Viluppuram district mostly in the state of Tamil Nadu, India with some parts in the Union Territory of Puducherry in South India.
The structure of Auroville was planned by the French architect Roger Anger.
Mirra Alfassa’s goal was to create a universal township “where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.” The result of her project is the unique city of Auroville.
Known as the City of Dawn, (in French, ‘aurore‘ means dawn and ‘ville‘ means city), Auroville was initially planned for about 50,000 people, but it has never had as many inhabitants.

Today, we can find about 2,000 people from 50 different countries, nationalities and cultures living in Auroville. Most of them are writers, artists, doctors, engineers, chefs, teachers, farmers, and students. Some come here for a brief period, considering the place as a spiritual resort where one can find inner peace.
In the middle of the city, there is a gold-plated sphere made of 1,415 large gold discs. Suspended above 12 “petals” or themed meditation rooms, each of which is flanked by a themed garden, the marvelous structure looks like a giant lotus flower, or a golf ball, as some say.
The plan of Auroville as seen from above.
Auroville doesn’t have a formal leader, police, security patrols. Daily problems are solved by numerous committees and working groups. It’s a self-sustained eco-city with a clean environment, which is why many efforts are being made into recycling. You cannot buy alcohol in the city and cars are not allowed on the roads.
Residents of Auroville are expected to contribute a monthly contribution to the community. They are asked to help the community whenever possible by work, money, or kind. The “guest contribution”, or a daily fee paid by the guests of Auroville, constitutes a part of Auroville’s budget.

It does sound like a paradise, but there are problems in Auroville. In the last few years, there have been numerous burglaries, harassment cases and murders in the city. Auroville is no longer the pure paradise it was meant to be.
Can humans create a perfect society? It’s really a difficult question to answer because it depends on what is meant by a “perfect society”. Many consider nanotechnology to be the solution to most of our world’s problems, but there are also disadvantages that we should not dismiss. Some scientists have suggested nanotechnology can help us create a perfect society.
We can ask ourselves whether the solution to the world’s problems lies within us or technology. Throughout human history, people have tried to create a utopia, the perfect society. Yet, we have never managed to do so. What are the requirements and how can we achieve this everlasting dream?
