Amazing ‘Sigiriya’- ‘Lion Rock’ Fortress In Sri Lanka
|MessageToEagle.com – The name ‘Sigiriya’ refers to an ancient site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock the so-called ‘Sigiriya Rock’.
Sigiriya rock or the ‘Lion rock’ fortress is the spectacular and the oldest structure in the region, outlined with a web of gardens, tanks and structures.
It is a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters (660 ft) high, located in the Matale District of the Central Provincen of Sri Lanka.
The ‘Lion rock’ fortress features graffiti, frescoes, beautiful, landscaped gardens and fantastic 360-degree views.
It was even established as the stronghold of a rogue king over 1,500 years ago, who believed it would give his forces a strategic advantage if attacked.
The structure was both a palace and a fortress with five gates and measured just under two miles wide (3 km) by just over a half-mile long (1 km).
The site plan consisted of a citadel, an upper palace on the top of the rock, and lower palaces at ground level.

The ‘Lion rock’ earned its name from the enormous lion which greeted visitors halfway up the rock on a small plateau.
The same lion carved of rock warned enemies approaching the fortress.
