Mythical ‘White City’ Hidden In Deep Jungle Of Honduras Begins To Reveal Its Secrets

MessageToEagle.com – A long forgotten almost legendary city La Ciudad Blanca (“White City”) is probably hidden in the jungles of Honduras, Central America.

The White City has often been linked to Central American mythology. Some think it was the birthplace of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl.

According to popular folklore, the ancestors of the indigenous Pech people, whose exact origin is still unknown, built a white city of immense proportions. The city was a sacred place of great beauty and a place full of gold.

Over the years, many professional and amateur archeologists and treasure hunters have made attempts to find it and some even claimed they located it, but none have produced credible evidence.

The area of the Mosquitia rainforest – where the city is probably located – is very remote, impenetrable and only partly mapped. Some plant specimens in the jungle, for example, can grow to 70 meters high and they don’t make any search easier.

For a long time, visitors to the jungle reported sightings of a large city lost in the rainforest, but these were nothing but rumors.

Apparently this situation has changed.

A year ago, a team of researchers identified prehistoric foundations and mounds that may belong to the fabled city of La Ciudad Blanca.
The team used a device called (LiDAR), (light detection and ranging) that is perfectly capable to map ancient ruins and deliver precise locations of features withing fractions of meters, indispensable for further study.

Thus, a complex of mounds and, possibly, ancient ruins, canals, roads, and terraces suddenly become visible when laser reflections from the tree canopy are filtered out of the lidar data from a site in the Mosquitia region of Honduras.

“We know something is there and we must explore that region to know more,” explained Virgilio Paredes of the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History (IHAH). “The results from the initial imaging survey produced a map that has excited everyone because it reveals colossal ruins in size.”

The ancient city was first recorded by Hernan Cortes who, in 1526, less than five years after vanquishing the Aztecs, came to the colonial town of Trujillo, on the north coast of Honduras, to look for the fabled town.

Cortes’ search for this Central American El Dorado marks the beginning of the Ciudad Blanca legend, as well as the first of many failed attempts to find this lost city.

In 1939, American researcher Theodore Morde claimed to have evidence of large, ruined buildings. He also narrated an ancient legend told him by his Paya guides.

The legend says that there once was a temple with a large staircase leading to a statue of a “Monkey God” – a parallel to the Hindu deity Hanuman, who together with Ganesha and Garuda, is considered one of the three major Hindu deities with animalistic physical features.

It is said that from his father Vayu, the wind god, Hanuman received the ability to fly.

The legend that belongs to the oral tradition of the Pech Indians, who inhabited the territory of Honduras since pre-Columbian times (by some accounts, from about 2,500 years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus) also says that the temple had a long, staired approach lined with stone effigies of monkeys.

The heart of the Temple was a stone platform on which was the statue of the Monkey God himself. The steps of this platform were said to have been flanked by immense balustrades decorated with the colossal image of a frog on one side and the other with a crocodile.

Morde had brought from his expedition many artifacts, which he deposited in the Smithsonian Institute.

Shortly after the war, Morde organized another expedition to the City of the Monkey God, when being in London, he was smashed to death by a car.

La Ciudad Blanca is located “somewhere” in the thick, virgin rainforest in the Mosquitia region of Honduras, where along the Plátano River, can also be found amazing and mysterious old petroglyphs of “Walpaulbantara,” carved into the rocks by unknown ancient jungle settlers.

These petroglyphs may have functioned as boundary markers or warnings to outsiders, or may recount ancient creation myths.

One day, the Mosquitia’s impenetrable and deep jungle will reveal its ancient secrets. The discovery of the lost city of Ciudad Blanca could be the most important archeological discovery of the 21st century.
