It is a natural phenomenon and it all started back in 1971 when geologists accidentally opened what today has become known as the Door To Hell!
Looking for natural gas in the village of Derweze, Turkmenistan the geologists suddenly discovered an underground cavern.
The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a huge hole with a diameter of 70 meters (230 ft).
No person dared to go down because it was filled with gas. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided to burn it of.
After being ignited, so the gas couldn’t escape from the hole it has been burning ever since 1971 without any sign of stopping.
