10 Unexplained Mysteries In Arizona

1. Mysterious Black Mist Over Casa Grande Mountain

The mountains trail system is popular among hikers and bicyclists, but many who have visited this region tell of a peculiar and scary phenomenon they observed.  People say they have seen a mysterious black mist over the Casa Grande Mountain. The black mist appears at nighttime and when it engulfs you, you’re suddenly experiencing very uneasy feelings.

Stories about the black mist have been circulating for years, and many have tried to explain the cause of this unusual phenomenon. The site was once home to an ancient civilization known as the Hohokam people. About 1100 A.D, they suddenly vanished, but they left behind impressive ancient ruins we can admire today. Suddenly, they vanished for the unknown. Some think the black mist is somehow connected to their ancient practices.

Another explanation for the black mist could be the smoke from the old firearms coming from the Elsy Pearson shooting range that is located not far away.  No-one really knows the true nature of the black mist, but it’s an interesting, beautiful and frightening phenomenon.

2. Is A Mysterious Interdimensional Portal That Can Alter Time Hidden In The Arizona Mountains?

Many years ago, a group of treasure hunters went on a journey looking for lost mines and hidden Spanish treasures. They traveled to Southern Arizona and they brought back a remarkable story.

Ron Quinn and his friends said that high among the rugged terrain bordering Mexico, there is a canyon where time itself is altered. The treasure hunters had some unusual experiences there. They saw odd lights in the skies, strange creatures and people who appear to enter our reality from another dimension.

According to Ron and his friends, Native Indians are aware of this strange place, but they are cautious and do not share their knowledge about the time altering canyon with outsiders. 3. Sedona’s Mysterious Vortexes

Sedona is well-known for its puzzling energy forces. Over the years, Sedona has become a hotspot for anyone interested in the paranormal or investigators of strange energy forces. Over 4 million people travel every year to visit Sedona to experience and learn more about these unknown forces. According to local folklore, there are tunnels leading from Sedona to another space-time dimension. It is said that once Star People were present in Sedona, a place where special energies and frequencies are present.  Many think Sedona is an inter-dimensional portal. 4. Lost Ancient Civilization Of Grand Canyon

When news about the lost ancient civilization of Grand Canyon reached the world, many were shocked. In in 1909, the Arizona Gazette published an article stating that a secret underground city had been discovered beyond Grand Canyon. It was said that G.E. Kinkaid, an archaeologist from the Smithsonian Institute had discovered traces of a complete unknown ancient civilization that inhabited mysterious cavern, hewn in solid rock.

The ancient lost civilization of Grand Canyon were foreigners from distant lands. Kinkaid found ancient tablets engraved with hieroglyphics, and he thought these ancient people may have been from Egypt. The entire story became a very controversial topic. The Smithsonian Institute denied there was any truth to these claims, but several alternative researchers were of a different opinion. 5. Is A Crashed UFO Hidden Under The Dreamy Draw Dam?

Ufologists claim that two extraterrestrial craft crashed around Phoenix in 1947, one in Dreamy Draw and one in Cave Creek. Officially, no wreckage of the craft has ever been found. According to the Phoenix New Times, “that’s because the government built the “useless” 455 foot-long Dreamy Draw Dam to cover up the space ship crash.”

As Weird U.S reports, there were rumors “locals recovered a pair of 4.5-foot tall carcasses from the spacecraft, which were stored in a local man’s freezer until the authorities could arrive. The government supposedly took over the investigation, and later built the Dreamy Draw Dam on top of the crash site. Some speculate that it was not needed for flood control purposes at all.”

The Dreamy Draw Dam was built in 1973 and its main function is to prevent flooding to the surrounding neighborhoods during monsoon season.

6. Who Built The Ancient Beehive-Shaped Stone Coke Ovens?

If you are more interested in following in the footsteps of your ancestors instead of chasing traces of extraterrestrials in Arizona, then you should definitely visit the Cochran Ghost Town where you’ll find curious ancient structures known as Coke Ovens. According to Ancient Pages, “these baffling structures stand 32 feet tall and are made from stone granite blocks held in place without mortar.” Five ancient ovens stand next to each other. 7. What Happened To Arizona’s Thunderbird Photo?

In April 1890, two cowboys claim they spotted a huge Thunderbird in the Arizona desert. The sighting occurred near the town of Tombstone. This giant thunderbird had the body of a serpent, enormous wings, two clawed feet and the face of an alligator. The two men photographed the beast, or at least most think that’s what they did. According to Weird U.S, “the enormous wingspan of the creature was said to have been 160 feet and the body was more than 92 feet long. It was smooth and featherless, more like a bat than a bird. The cowboys cut off a piece of the wing and brought it with them into Tombstone, Arizona.

Or least that’s the story that was allegedly told in an April 1892 issue of the Tombstone newspaper, the “Epitaph.”

It was said that Epitaph published the photo of the creature, but the Epitaph later denied this had ever taken place. They looked through several issues trying to locate the Thunderbird photo, but it wasn’t there. So, where did the photo come from? Was it a hoax or published by another magazine? Many researchers recall seeing the Thunderbird photo, but no-one knows where and when. Arizona’s Thunderbird photo is still an unsolved mystery.

It can also be added that in Native American myths and legends the powerful thunderbird is believed to have been sent by gods to protect humans from evil.

8. Mysterious Sightings At The Bird Cage Theater

The Bird Cage Theater has a nasty reputation and dark history. Today it’s popular tourist destinations for those interested in the paranormal. According to Tombstone Bird Cage, “visitors and employees of The Bird Cage Theater have reported seeing the spirits of former prostitutes and men in cowboy hats. Some claim to have been touched and pushed by unseen forces. At night, the sounds of laughter, yelling and music have been heard, as though the parties of “The Old West” were still raging.”

Legend tells that 26 people were once killed here, and there are over 140 bullet holes visible inside this now haunted building. Photographers who visited the theater report their cameras suddenly self-operated and took photos. If you believe in ghosts, spirits or are simply curious about these unexplained sightings, the Bird Cage Theater is a place you should visit.

9. Route 666 – Where People Vanish Into Thin Air

Highway planners didn’t pay much attention to superstition or religious beliefs when the named what many remember as the Devil’s Highway – Route 666. Soon after the signs appeared, they were stolen by those who disliked the name and superstitious drivers field complaints. Arizona changed the numbering to U.S. 191 in 1993. There are many enduring legends about Route 666. This long and desolated road has frightened many drivers. People claim they have seen mysterious ghost-like figures on the Devil’s Highway in the middle of the night. There are several reports of people who vanished into thin air along Route 666. Some witnesses state they have seen people appear out of nowhere on the Devil’s Highway.

The Navajo Indians’ sacred mountain Shiprock, is accessed via Route 666. According to Native American legend, the rock was once a great bird that transported the ancestral people of the Navajos to their lands in what is now northwestern New Mexico.

More Strange And Unexplained

It is now said that Native American shape-shifters like the Skinwalker terrorize drivers long Route 666. The 200 mile long Devil’s Highway has seen many fatal accidents involving traffic. Whenever an accident happened, people blamed the name forgetting human error, weather, speed and other factors that contribute to highway accidents.

Today Devil’s Highway is known as US Route 491. There are now less reports of mysterious sightings and unexplained vents, but it still happens people spot something unusual along the highway, and the Skinwalker is still reported to trouble drivers.

10. Forgotten Flagstaff Anomaly – What Caused The Mysterious Ring In The Skies?

In 1963, residents were startled when looked up a saw a strange ring clearly visible in the skies. Today, the Flagstaff anomaly is almost forgotten but at the time many tried to find a scientific explanation for this enormous halo. The ring was flowing for about 30 minutes after the Sun had vanished. The mysterious ring attracted visitors from far way and reports arrived from Tucson, Colorado and New Mexico.

In the book Weird Arizona, author Wesley Treat writes that “ the distance from which it was seen meant the circle must have hovered at an astonishing altitude. Extensive analysis of amateur photographs placed the ring at almost twenty-seven miles above sea level and showed it to be around fifty miles. Though researchers at first believed the feature may have been a meteorological phenomenon similar to stratospheric clouds found above the Earth’s poles, the object was too high by several miles. The ring was so high in the atmosphere, in fact, that it lay in a region in which water can’t form drops or ice crystals to eve create a cloud.”
